The Village NEWs

Nov 7 - Alton Village Family School Connections Night
What a great night at Alton Village! Nearly 300 people attended the Family-School Connections Night and sat in on 16 different sessions run by our incredible AVPS staff team. It was great to see such engagement from our school community! Thank you for staying engaged in your child's education and for always being supportive of the work happening within the HDSB and specifically, here at Alton Village. We always look forward to seeing our community in the building and celebrating our students.
The photos seen here are from the "Glow Art" session where teachers presented the art work that our students had created using glowing paint and then highlighted by "black light" in the classroom. One of the many great sessions presented on Thursday night.
Inclement Weather Reminder
With temperatures still keeping us guessing, winter weather could surprise us any time! To stay prepared, families are encouraged to review the HDSB Inclement Weather Reminders to know how we communicate important updates about school closures and bus cancellations. A printable version of this information is also available. If your child is bused to school, please ensure you know which transportation zone you are located in. Let’s stay connected and safe when wintry conditions arrive!

The AVPS Terry Fox Run takes place in the afternoon of Thursday, Oct.10th. Students will be running/walking around our school property in support of Cancer Research and the Terry Fox Foundation. Parking Lot - Out of Bounds
Please be mindful that the North-East parking lot (smaller lot) is NOT to be used for pick ups and drop offs. We are noticing an increase in vehicles blocking to area by the dumpsters and the bus loop entrance. This creates safety issues for our students as they walk on the property and produces back-ups for busses and other HDSB vehicles trying to access our building.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Student Well-Being & Mental Health
We would like to introduce our school’s Child and Youth Counsellor (CYC): Allysa Antinori and our School's Social Worker (SW): Jenny White. Jenny and Allysa will be a part of the Alton Village Public School community this year.
What is a CYC?
CYCs are an active and integral part of the school community, often participating in school-wide activities (e.g. well-being teams, youth engagement, parent/guardian/caregiver information sessions, etc.) with educators to enhance student well-being. Students receive mental health literacy and social-emotional learning while at school through the curriculum. As a complement to this learning, CYCs promote mental health through sharing and co-leading evidence-based social-emotional learning and activities to provide classwide programming. CYCs are also part of response teams for all schools in the Halton District School Board (e.g. Tragic Events Response Team, Black Equity and Human Rights Team and suicide risk screening).
How CYCs can support students
Parents/guardians/caregivers may receive notification letters and updates throughout the school year about evidence-based social-emotional literacy materials shared in classrooms with CYCs. CYCs can also provide specific opportunities for students through small group or individual sessions focusing on psychoeducation, well-being and skill building. These sessions support students in reaching their goals. This is done in consultation with and consent from parents.
What is a Social Worker?
Social Workers are an integral part of the school community. Social workers work together with students, parents/caregivers, staff and community providers to help students feel well and have a positive school experience. Students learn ways to address their feelings and emotions through identity-affirming evidenced-based therapeutic interventions. Social Workers, like CYCs, are also part of response teams for all schools in the HDSB. Access to a Social Worker is done through your child’s school with parent/guardian consent. Grade 7 and 8 students can self-refer and receive individual psychotherapeutic support if they are 12 years of age and older.
How can Social Workers support students?
Social Workers use psychotherapeutic interventions to support students on a variety of issues. These interventions are evidence-based and are identity-affirming to ensure that students feel that their voice is being heard and validated. Some interventions used include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Social Workers and students work towards goal based outcomes.
Further information and additional support about the full complement of services from Student Well-Being please refer to the HDSB Mental Health & Well-Being webpage for more information on the support parent section available to students at school and how to access this support.

Welcome Back AVPS!
On behalf of all the staff of Alton Village Public School I want to thank the community for a wonderful first week back! Our students were able to reconnect with friends, meet new classmates and get to know their new teachers. It was great to see so many familiar, smiley faces and to meet our new students as well. 2024-2025 is shaping up to be a great year at Alton Village.
-Mr. Marks
Principal AVPS
Fun Fair & Open House
Our annual fall fun fair and open house will take place on Thursday, September 26th. This is always one of the biggest events of the school year and brings together our community to celebrate a new school year. This event is run by our school council and requires a large number of volunteers. School council will be hosting an in-person meeting at the school on Thursday, September 12th at 7pm. Click here to sign-up for the meeting. More information about the Fun Fair will be coming out over the next few weeks.
Student Safety
We want to draw your attention to a few items that will help support our students’ and their safety while on our school property.
Both before and after school we are asking that parents stay off of the blacktop area. This allows our staff to have the space and sight-lines required to safely sign in and dismiss our students.
The east parking lot (small lot) and the “Kiss and Ride” (in front of the building) are out-of-bounds during pick up and drop off. The kiss and ride is only for our buses and students who need extra help getting into and out of their cars. We have noticed the overcrowding in these areas are leading to unsafe conditions for our students as they walk to and from our property.
When dropping off your children at the front doors in the morning one of our staff members will walk your child to their class. Parents are not to be in the building without formally signing into the office.
Upcoming Dates (2024-2025 School Year):

Thank You School Council
We wanted to take this opportunity, on behalf of our school community, to express our sincere gratitude to the school council for their outstanding contributions to our school community this year. Your commitment to volunteerism and fundraising has been truly remarkable, and the impact of your efforts is evident throughout our school.
The success of events such as the Fun Fair, Holiday Shop, Dance-a-Thon, Games Night and many more is a testament to all of your hard work and dedication. The funds raised have allowed us to enhance our STEM program with new robotics equipment, provide much-needed shade for our sports teams with two brand new tents, and purchase new instruments for our award-winning band program. These enhancements would not have been possible without your generous support.
Your partnership is invaluable, and we are grateful for the time and energy you have invested in our school. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the students at Alton Village.

As the school year comes to a close, we know many parents like to thank their children’s teachers with a small gift. If you are looking for a non-traditional gift with meaning, consider making a donation in the teacher’s honour to the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF).
HLF is a registered charity that provides financial support exclusively for students in the HDSB. Not only will your recipient receive a card notifying them of your generous gesture, but your donation will also help support students with essential needs like food, clothing and school supplies. EQAO
Congratulations to all of our EQAO writers this past week! Our grade 3's and grade 6's did such a great job and showed wonderful focus and attention to detail as they completed the Provincial assessment.
Individual results will be sent home in the fall (new school year) and our school-wide results will be available around the same time.
Duffle Bag Theatre
Our students got to enjoy a wonderful French play from the "Duffle Bag Theatre". The theatre group travels around to schools teaching the French language to students through stories and plays. The play was about "la bête terrible" ("the beast"). It was full of jokes and laughter and, of course, the French language. Some of our students even got to play special roles in the play. A great way to be immersed in the language.
Vipers out in the World
Our students travelled a lot this past week.
Both our Senior Boys and Girls Soccer teams were a part of full day tournaments here in Burlington. The teams represented our Vipers with pride and played their hearts out.
Our band also travelled to Canada's Wonderland this past Wednesday and got a chance to play on the big stage. And of course, a trip to Wonderland wouldn't be complete without a few rides as well. Our band had a great time celebrating their hard work all year and playing for the fans.
The Grade 3's went on another trip to the pool as they took part in the "Swim to Survive" program", a program offered in conjunction with the City of Burlington to support students in learning the life skill of swimming!
Robotics Challenge
Our The Grade 7 and 8's took part in a Robotics Challenge were they learned to code the robots and compete against other teams. The event promoted problem solving, team work and technological know-how. There were some impressive machines built including the one pictured here getting its complex code uploaded by one of our students!

A huge thank you to all the students that put in the hard work over the past number of months to prepare. Also, thank you to the staff leads, Ms. Wojkowski and Ms. Tayler for their support a guidance. The play was a huge hit, we can't wait for more performances next year!

AVPS Staff Appreciation Day
A message from School Council
The teachers and staff at Alton Village Public School do so much for our students! As a way to say thank you, the Alton Village School Council is hosting an Appreciation Day on Wednesday, May 29th from 10am-2pm.
To help make this event a success, we need your help! Volunteers are needed to drop off food (salads, entrées, desserts, etc.) starting at 8:30 am and throughout the day on May 29th. Again this year, we will be setting up a buffet that teachers and staff can visit at their leisure. If you can contribute to the lunch or can donate your time please sign up online or contact us at avpsevents@gmail.com.
If you have a special entrée, appetizer, or dessert that everyone loves. . .don’t be shy! Not a cook? No time? No problem! We also appreciate monetary contributions and gift cards (e.g. Fortino’s, Longos, etc.). Monetary contributions can be made through the SchoolCash Online system by selecting Make a Donation (please enter “Teacher Appreciation” in the Message field) or Gift Cards can be dropped off to the office.
Council would also like to encourage families to show their appreciation by sending in notes and cards. We will also have “Appreciation Stations” set up around the school for students to share their thanks.
To help make this event go smoothly please:
Sign Up and let us know what you will be dropping off.
Have hot dishes already heated (crockpots are a great idea). We do not have access to "heat up" dishes and fridge space is limited. The temperature that your dish is delivered at is the temperature it will be served.
Label all your dishes and serving utensils with your name and child's teacher (if you would like them returned) - items not labelled will not be returned.
Volunteer to help out during the day - it's a great way to meet all the staff!
Help us show our teachers and school staff how much we appreciate them!

Our Growing STEM Program
Hopefully you are hearing from your children about the building and programming of robots in the classroom or in the clubs they've joined. Over the past months, we have witnessed tremendous growth in our STEM learning initiatives, thanks to Council's and your generous contributions. One of the most recent outcomes of our focus in this area is that four of our students recently competed in the Ontario Skills Olympics in Toronto, representing the HDSB. We are extremely proud to announce that they finished 3rd in the Province, winning bronze!
STEM education empowers our students to:
Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills: STEM challenges students to think creatively, analyze information, and find innovative solutions.
Cultivate collaboration and teamwork: STEM projects foster cooperation and the development of essential communication skills.
Gain exposure to future career possibilities: Many of the fastest-growing and most in-demand careers heavily rely on STEM fields.
To enhance our hands-on STEM learning experiences, we are seeking donations of LEGO sets, particularly those containing gears and rods. LEGO provides a versatile platform for students to explore engineering principles, design solutions, and engage in collaborative building projects.
If you have LEGO sets that are no longer in use, or even if you have just gears and axles, please consider donating them. We will be accepting your donations in the main office.
Once again, thank you for your continuing support and dedication to our school's mission of providing a top-notch education for all students. Your partnership is truly invaluable, and we look forward to continuing our journey together towards excellence in STEM learning.

Honouring our Students' Commitment to a Sustainable Future
This past week our school's Superintendent Mr. Flahat came by for a visit and stopped in to see the hard work being done by some of our students around building a sustainable future and becoming more eco-informed. With the support of their teacher, Ms. Wojkowski, students presented their plans to Mr. Flahat as he listened with great interest. These were the same students who took the lead on our recent Eco Night celebration. Our school has been doing some pretty amazing things to support the students' vision for a better, greener, Alton Village. Some very impressive young leaders helping to guide us into the future. Way to go Vipers!
Ticks in Burlington
Like many municipalities throughout Ontario, Burlington is considered a risk area for ticks and Lyme disease. While the risk remains low, residents should be aware of areas where ticks may be present and how to protect themselves and their families from tick bites.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick, which are usually present in wooded, brushy or tall grass areas.
Residents throughout the region should continue to take precautions to prevent tick bites when enjoying the outdoors. Here are some steps to protect your health:
If possible, avoid known tick areas (such as wooded, brushy or tall grass areas) and stay on trails when outdoors.
Cover up by wearing long sleeved, light coloured shirts and pants with tightly woven fabric.
Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pant legs into your socks to keep ticks away from your bare skin.
Wear shoes that cover your entire foot, avoiding sandals or open shoes.
Spray clothing and exposed skin with an insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin.
Check your clothing and body for any ticks after spending time outdoors, especially around the groin, armpits and hairline. Carefully remove any ticks from yourself or a family member.
Check your pets regularly for ticks as they could carry ticks inside your home.
For more information please visit the halton.ca site on tick-borne diseases.

Multi-Lingual Storytime
This week some of our grade 1 and grade 2 students had the pleasure of listening to a favourite classic tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, in both Russian and English. One of our grade 8 students, who is fluent in Russian, read this story to a very captive audience. The students were also taught how to say 'welcome', 'pink' and 'flowers' in Russian. Previously, other primary students heard the same tale in Arabic, and were taught some Arabic words as well. At Alton Village we are very proud of the over 40 different languages spoken by our students.

Celebrating Student Achievements
A very busy week here at Alton Village was highlighted by a few amazing culminating performances by our students.
1 - our Grade 6, 7, 8 students took part in the Halton Skills Competition. A one day event that brings together schools from all over the Board to show their skills in the areas of Robotics, Film Production, Animation and many other fields. Our Vipers had an amazing showing and represented our school with great pride. The final results of their hard work should be released sometime after the spring break, we'll keep everyone updated on how our teams did.
2 - a wonderful evening of music and the arts was celebrated on Thursday night as Mr. Pavlovsky and Ms. O'Reilly hosted our "2024 Music Showcase". We saw terrific performances from a grade 6 homeroom class, the Jr band, the Sr band and several incredible soloists. There was also some beautiful visual art on display in the village square from Ms. Edl and her intermediate art students. A great night was had by all and it was a wonderful to celebrate with our students who work so hard all year!

a quiet, no-eating area will be provided. Technology will not be allowed in this space
Volunteers Needed for Ramadan
Looking for parent volunteers for fasting supervision during Ramadan. Please reach out to Ms. Lazerte if you have a police reference check on file and would like to help out with supervision during nutrition breaks (10:20-11:00 & 12:40-1:20).

Student of Excellence
Congratulations to Kyera D. for being selected as our 2024 Alton Village Student of Excellence! Here's a little bit about Kyera and her impact on our school community.
Kyera is a hard-working, determined, and caring student who puts forth 110% in everything she does. Her mature work ethic, responsible behaviour, and positive growth mindset demonstrate how she leads by example. She challenges herself by looking for opportunities to think outside the box and will go out of her comfort zone to try new things. In addition to achieving very high academic success, Kyera demonstrates a strong desire to continue to grow as a learner by seeking feedback on her work and applying it to future assignments. Kyera makes an effort to be an integral part of her school community. She is always the first one to help out with school-wide events and she does it to the best of her ability. She takes part in a variety of extracurriculars from athletics, to band, to student leadership, and can be counted on to show up every time. Kyera greets everyone she meets with a friendly smile showing that she cares about the people in her community. Kyera faces obstacles with grace and determination and focuses on the positives to help her rise above challenges. Kyera embodies the four pillars of our Alton Village community - Kindness, Respect, Citizenship, and Leadership! Congratulations Kyera!
Alton Village Band Wins BIG!
This past week our Senior Band travelled to Hamilton to take part in the Golden Horseshoe Music Festival. This event brings together school bands from all over the GTHA in a big celebration of Music. Our Alton Village Band was amazing and showed incredibly well. Our Grade 8 band won GOLD and our Grade 7 band won Silver +. This is a tremendous honour and great reward for all the hard work put in by our young musicians. A big thanks to Mr. Pavlovsky for his leadership and conducting. If you want to hear the band in action, they will be performing at the Music Schowcase on March 7th. Information about the Music Schowcase should already be in your mailbox.

Alton Village Music Showcase - March 7th
As you may know, Thursday March 7 is the big day for the Alton Village Music Showcase! There is a morning concert starting at 11:15am, and an evening concert starting at 7:00pm. Our Grade 8 Senior Band, Grade 7 Junior Band, Class 6-2, and several talented graduating students have been working hard to prepare an evening of enjoyable music for you. FREE tickets will be available on school cashless. Families of performing students will each be offered 2 tickets for the 11:15am performance and 2 tickets for the 7:00pm performance. Please note some important changes to this year's concert -- grades 4, 5 and most of grade 6 will NOT be part of this performance, but will instead have their own junior concert on Thursday April 18!
Student musicians are expected to show up by 6:30pm in concert clothing (Class 6-2 white top or black top; and black or dark bottoms)(Senior and Junior Bands in their music festival outfit). Parents are encouraged to stay for the whole show (about 50 minutes), as there is supervision provided by the staff for your children before and after they perform. Prior to the start of the concert, feel free to enjoy student artwork, which will be on display in the Village Square; and buy some books at our annual book fair, which will be held in the library. Please note, any non-performing students wanting to attend the concert MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Dance-a-Thon!!
Dance-a-thon was a huge success again this year and BIG thanks goes out to the school council volunteers and organizers for hosting such a wonderful event. The students had a wonderful time this past Wednesday, dancing, singing and partying along with all the balloons, the lights and the DJ. What a fun day at Alton Village!
Students Participate In The Student Trustee Elections
On Thursday, February 22 the Grade 7 & 8 students were able to vote in the Student Trustee elections. Students spent time reviewing the 24 candidates' information and voting on the best candidates to represent students' voices in the Student Senate.
The Student Senate is a group of passionate leaders from public schools across the Halton District School Board. They meet once a month to provide the student's perspective on board issues and to voice the questions and concerns of Halton students. The Student Trustees relay these perspectives to the Board of Trustees to ensure that students are being represented. This was a great opportunity for students to be engaged in the democratic process and use their critical thinking skills. We are proud of all the Grade 7 & 8 students for sharing their voices!

Fashion Forward
HDSB's Fashion Forward program is up and running again - an initiative to help provide gently used formal wear for students attending graduation or prom (grade 6, 8 and 12) at no cost!
We ran this event last year and it was a big success. We helped over 400 students from our board. This year, we are giving ourselves more time to collect items, and will be hosting several open houses within Halton (2 in February and 1 in May). We will be hosting open houses earlier this year to help alleviate stress and pressure on families as their child's events start to take place in the spring.
With that, I'm reaching out to see if you can help with collecting donations!
Items we are looking for include:
formal dresses/gowns (we accept all donations, however, are quite low on larger sizes 12+)
dress shirts
dress pants (we accept all donations, however, are quite low on smaller sizes 34 and below)
suits
jumpers
accessories: ties, bow ties, suspenders, shoes, jewelry, purses
unused/sealed makeup, perfumes and hair products
Donations are accepted at the following locations throughout Halton:

Guest Speaker
Our Grade 7's had a wonderful opportunity to visit with a special guest speaker this past week. Pardeep Nagra is a Human Rights & Equity Advisor with the Halton District School Board and spoke to our students about finding your passion, exploring how our identities intersect, building a culture of respect, and the power of a positive, growth mindset. We were very fortunate to have spent a couple of afternoon with Pardeep and we look forward to seeing the impact of his presentation in our school community.
Morning Announcements
At AVPS we have made a switch in how we deliver our Morning Announcements. In an effort to better protect our instructional minutes and not interrupt the flow of our mornings, we have moved to digital announcements. Although O' Canada is played each morning over the P.A. system, every teacher will now be projecting the announcements slideshow in their homeroom each morning. This enables staff to choose the most appropriate time to go over the announcements with their students (as long as it's before 1st break) and ensures that students can families can also see what is happening around our school. The announcements are also available on the AVP website under the "Morning Announcements" section.
Clubs and Teams
A number of clubs of teams have started up around the Village including Sr. Volleyball teams, Gr 7 & 8 computer science club, Student Leadership, Vex Robotics, Inktober Art Club, Run Club, Homework Club, Gr. 3-8 Choir, Sr. Band, Gr 4 Friendship Club, The Zen Zone, Gr 1-3 Noodle Hockey, and World Issues Club.
A reminder, if you missed something, our morning announcements are now digital and can be accessed through our AVP school website.

Once in a Lifetime Opportunity
On Wednesday, the students from Ms. Stein's Grade 5 class had a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington to hear a presentation from world-renowned primatologist and anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall. Ms. Stein won a contest to be selected as one of only four classes in Halton to attend the presentation. It was a wonderful honour and opportunity for our students. I'm sure our students will remember this for a very long time....in fact, you may see them on the news (link).
Terry Fox Walk & Run
On Friday, our school took part in the annual Terry Fox Walk/Run in support of Cancer Research in Canada. Our students carried on a long legacy in this country of supporting the Marathon of Hope and of the work begun by Terry. The Terry Fox Run, has ignited cancer research in Canada, raising more than $850 million since 1980, and has brought hope and health to millions of Canadians. To raise money for cancer research Terry Fox ran 143 consecutive marathons or a little over 5,373 km's. Here at Alton Village, our students completed a total of 7324 laps around our property which works out to about 4800 km's, more than 114 marathons....all in one day! Way to go Vipers!

Open House / Fun Fair (a message from School Council)
As the school year is kicking off to a great start, we are fast approaching our annual Alton Village Open House/Fun Fair… and we need your help!
For those of you that are new to the Viper community, each year we pair our Open House/Meet the Teacher night with our carnival Fun Fair (putting the "Fun" in Fundraiser!) with inflatables, games, concessions, raffle, vendors and more. This year, our event is scheduled for Thursday, September 28th from 4:30pm-7:30pm.
Classroom Basket Raffle
We are once again collecting donations from each classroom to create themed baskets for our popular raffle. Each class will be assigned a theme this week. Students then have until Monday, September 25th to bring in their items to their classrooms. They will be wrapped by theme and placed on display at Thursday’s fair. No time? Can’t think of what to donate? Gift cards can be donated to the office or a monetary donation made through our cashless system via the donation tab would be appreciated. Every little bit helps.
Volunteers
As they say, “it takes a village”….and that is never more true than with our Fun Fair. Click on the link below to sign up for a slot at this year’s fair. High school students are also welcome to volunteer to earn their mandatory community volunteer hours. This event cannot run without the help from volunteers, come join the fun!

the Village!
On September 6th we welcomed students back into the village. The staff were excited to see the students and to hear about their summer breaks. It was so nice to see our old friends and to begin to form new friendships as well. It's going to be a great year!
A HUGE thank you to all the families for taking extra care when travelling around the school grounds. Especially at this time of year (back to school) it's important to stay aware and make sure that we are travelling to and from school safely.

Dear Families,
At Alton Village Public School we look for opportunities to enhance student skills in the area of mental health and well-being that reflect their ability to sustain good relationships with one another. We are very lucky to have a Child & Youth Counsellor (CYC) attached to our school to work with educators to enhance our students' well-being. Our CYC Allysa Antinori supports staff and students in the implementation of mental health and wellness initiatives, as well as the development and facilitation or co-facilitation of individual, class and school wide social emotional learning or wellbeing opportunities.
